New Theme

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Tada! It’s not flashy, but that’s why I really like it. I’m using 45 Degrees by Color Light Studio. I edited it by changing the overall width, colors and header to my liking, though. I might make some small tweaks still, but overall it’s how I want it to look.

I’d like to thank my mother for lending her artistic talents to create my new logo (she called it “Beauty and Brains”), the glasses-wearing, line drawing likeness of me up there. After whining to her that I was stuck and couldn’t come up with a logo, she crafted that for me, oh, in about a minute (literally) and sent it over IM several evenings ago.

She said it was just a draft, but I told her that it was perfect and not to worry about sending anything else. She was a little hesitant, but let me use it anyway! Aren’t moms just the bestest? 🙂

Wonderfully Soothing Whitespace

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

So, as you can see, I’ve switched themes. This theme is called “Cutline“. I like this one better than the last one, as it is easier on the eyes and there’s lots of lovely, soothing whitespace. The coding is squeaky clean for a theme, too! The CSS is entirely too much fun to futz with and the actual PHP is nice and organized.

All the photos in the header are mine, taken at various places along my travels. They will probably change with my mood and/or season, but I’m really liking the beach/ocean visuals at the moment. 🙂

Also, if you comment regularly, you might have noticed that you have your own unique avatar next to your name. Those icons are from my newest WordPress plugin, called “Wavatar“. The plugin assigns a totally unique avatar based on and tied to your email address you use to comment, but only if you don’t have a gravatar already. It’s a fun little plugin and, if you comment and don’t have a gravatar, I hope you like your specific “wavatar”!

Working on a New Look

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

I’ve been fiddling with a new template, because I just don’t do the “insta-theme” thing. This current theme, while I like it, is not something I am going to stick with. Personally, I like to fiddle and tweak and make my blogs’ theme my own.

Thing is, there are so many themes to choose from for WordPress that it makes my brain hurt. I have no idea where to start! There are several themes that I’ve come across, however, that do get the creative wheels turning (which is a good thing!). My favorite one, so far, is the Cutline theme. I really like that it can be easily (and simply) customized with a photo header. Another theme, which was more recently released, is Neoclassical. Again, the header can be personalized with a custom photo.

So, here’s a question. If you use WordPress, what theme do you use? And if you have made (or purchased) a custom theme, was it worth the time (and money)?

Since switching from Drupal to WordPress, I am just starting to learn what to look for, and what to stay away from, in WordPress themes, so I am open to any and all suggestions.

Okay, back to looking at themes!

Moved from Drupal to WordPress

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Yup! I went and did the unthinkable; I migrated my blog from Drupal to WordPress. I found a great resource, over at D’Arcy Norman dot net, that helped me immensely with copying over the tables, etc. to the new database.

It was time. I no longer need all the functionality of Drupal, so WordPress was the obvious choice. Just a warning, however, that things will be mighty funky-looking/acting around here for a while until I get all the photos/images, links, categories and comment issues ironed out.

Also, I know I’ve been quiet around here lately, and I will update with more soon. Both Kevin and I have been busy working on several side projects. Hope you are all well!
