Trip to Thailand

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

In a little less than 5 days, Kevin and I will on our way to Thailand to spend 10 full days exploring the country! This is a trip that we have been wanting to take for years, and now, to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary (October 25), we are finally going! I am both ecstatic and nervous. It’s the good sort of nervous though; the butterflies-in-your-stomach kind.

I’ve never been overseas before and just the thought of being somewhere as exotic as Thailand is so exhilarating. New smells, new customs, new foods.. and a language that I know frightfully little of. Thankfully, there will be someone there who speaks both Thai and English. That puts a lot of worries to rest for me.

Usually, I’d be worried about what I can eat, but there are plenty of vegan/vegetarian-friendly restaurants over there and I am sure I will have many chances to thoroughly explore vegan Thai cuisine.

Our planned route takes us almost straight up the middle of the country. Our first stop is Bangkok, where we will stay for 3 nights, then a stop at Ayuthaya and Lopburi before heading to Phitsanulok for 1 night. From Phitsanulok we go to Lampang for 1 night. After a stop at Phayao, a historic rural town in Northern Thailand, we head for Chiang Rai for 2 nights. Our last stop is Chiang Mai for 1 night, then we fly back to Bangkok for 1 more night before flying back home.

Here is a screen shot of our route in Google Maps, with my addition of the English names of the cities:

During our trip, I hope to utilize my phone’s wifi capability to connect to free wifi hot spots in the cities we will be traveling to so I can blog our daily sightseeing. I’ll probably do one more test post to double-check that it works the way I want it to, as well.

If you have been to Thailand and have visited any of the cities we are staying in, please share with me your insights! Any tips or recommended sightseeing stops will be much appreciated.

A Normal Diet

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Recently, I decided to cut all caffeine, refined sugars, refined flours and alcohol from my diet. This is for many reasons, but mainly because I don’t feel good when I eat foods containing those things, nor do I feel good when I drink too much caffeine. Cutting out alcohol? That is because I am trying to give my liver a break, even though I don’t drink more than one glass of wine a week or less.

Although they are supportive, I’ve heard several jokes recently from friends and family that I’ve restricted my already “restrictive” diet (vegan) even more. Even though I laugh along with them, it still pains me on many levels that they just don’t “get it”.

Instead of going on a full-blown rant, I am linking to a blog post that says everything I want to say and more concerning what we put into our bodies and why I am so “restrictive” about what I put into mine. That said, here is the post: What is a “normal” diet? Consumers and food industry pundits have it all backwards.

Vegan Pig Out

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

..at Real Food Daily! Sunday night we went to my favorite Southern California vegan restaurant for my first pig out on real food again after the cleanse.

Of course, this being a proper pig out, we ordered an appetizer first. I’ve always wanted to try their “Better Than Cheddar Nachos”. They always looked so delicious when I’ve seen them on other people’s tables, too. When we ordered them, the server asked us if we wanted jalapeno cheese or regular cheese – of course I said jalapeno! Shortly after, there they were… so yummy, so melty, so delicious. We both dove in, but not before I doused my half with more jalapeno hot sauce the server gave us.

Better Than Cheddar Nachos

Wow, that hot sauce was HOT, but I looooved it. I think I enjoy the punishment. 😉 Kevin said it was hard not to tell the difference between the vegan nachos and “real” nachos. I wouldn’t know. All I knew was they were so good that we polished off the entire plate. They really could have been a shared meal between us, but we had already ordered our sammiches. Oh well!

I ordered my fave sammich at RFD: “The Total Ruben”, which is baked marinated tempeh on toasted sourdough rye bread with herbed tofu cheese spread, thousand island dressing and sauerkraut. It comes with a choice of side dish and I always order the potato salad because it’s the best damn potato salad I’ve ever had. The sammich is possibly my most favorite vegan dish of all time. I actually crave it sometimes and that’s when I know it’s time for a visit to Real Food Daily.

Total Ruben Sammich

Kev ordered “The Club”, which is lightly breaded seitan served club-style on toasted sourdough bread with tempeh bacon, lettuce, tomato and veganaise. It also comes with a choice of side dish, so he ordered his favorite – mashed potatoes. Kev really enjoyed his sammich and loved his mashed potatoes. He always says he wants to know their recipe. I think we’ll have to buy the cook book someday soon. 😉

The Club at Real Food Daily

For dessert (because what would a vegan pig out be without it?), I ordered the “Tofu Cheesecake”. Well, at first I ordered their “Moon Pie”, but they had just served their last one. There are no freezers at RFD, so they only make enough for the day on most desserts and when they run out, they’re out! So, in it’s place I ordered the cheesecake. They had a choice of the in-season fruit topping or chocolate drizzle. Uhmm, is there really any contest here? The chocolate, of course! The cheesecake was fresh, creamy, and delicious. Everything you’d expect from a “real” cheesecake, except much healthier. I almost forgot to take a photo before I started in on it, which is why the fork is there. Oops!

Tofu Cheesecake at Real Food Daily

I love Real Food Daily. In my opinion, it is the vegan restaurant to compare all other vegan restaurants to. Just the fact that RFD can make food taste good to a meat-eater really impresses me. If you also take into account that literally everything they make is 100% vegan, they only use natural sugars (nothing refined) and it’s mostly organic, well that just brings it in a class by itself.

If you’re ever in West Hollywood or Santa Monica and feel like pigging out vegan-style, check out it out.
