Call for Volunteers

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

The following was posted on the Best Friends website on January 10th. I’m crossposting because we really do need volunteers. Take a chance and do something that happens once in a lifetime. You won’t regret it!

Volunteers are urgently needed in New Orleans to help in the final drive to rescue pets displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

The work involves humane trapping of dogs and cats on the streets, and helping care for the animals at the rescue center.

The rescue program is managed by Best Friends Animal Society. If you’d like to donate a few days of your time to help the animals, please fill out our Volunteer Form at http://www.bestfriends.org/HF/VL.cfm.

I hope to see you here! 🙂

Santa Claws – A Success!

Monday, December 12th, 2005

Santa Claws Yesterday, Cat, Kevin and I volunteered at Petsmart for their Santa Claws event (the one I made reference to in an earlier post). It was a great success and I, for one, had a blast! There were many dogs, and even a couple kitties, who had their picture taken with Santa Claws.

Cat and IOriginally, Kevin was supposed to be Santa. Unfortunately, the general manager of the store had been Santa all morning and didn’t want to hand over the role to Kevin. Eh, it was fine, though, because she also admitted the costume was pretty sweaty at that point. :surprise: After hearing that, Kevin was totally obliged to let her continue to play the role of Santa Claws.

According to the manager, it was one of their busiest days, yet. I don’t doubt that claim because there was no downtime during our shift. In about two and a half hours, we raised over $150 for Cats in Need.

By the time we left, we were all starving! Good thing we already had plans for dinner. We invited Cat over and had a delicious meal of salad and vegan black bean chili served in a sourdough bread bowl. Kevin baked chocolate chip cookies from scratch for dessert. We had coffee and learned how to play a new board game we got.

All in all, a very rewarding and relaxing day. I should plan days like this before all my finals! Oh, if you’re so inclined, you may click on the photos for a larger view.

Last chance to volunteer at ACA’s Louisiana base camp!

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

Spend your holiday season doing something that really brings holiday cheer – help the cats rescued in Louisiana!

Alley Cat Allies will be closing their Louisiana base camp in a little over a week, on December 17th. I received word that they need help during these last few days! I know this is a hectic time of year, but by donating your time to help these displaced cats you can feel like you truly gave something back this holiday season.

If you can volunteer prior to their closing date on December 17th, please visit their website. Look over the volunteer information and fill out the volunteer form. Or, you may email their volunteer coordinator, Pilara.

Volunteers are needed for the following jobs:

  • Transporters for cats who are to be reunited with evacuated families, or those going to foster homes, shelters, and barn homes all across the country!
    • Own vehicle required
  • People with cat care experience for our base camp
    • Experience pilling, giving shots, and working with feral cats
    • Louisiana licensed veterinarians
    • Veterinary technicians
  • Helpers for general clean up as well as dismantling of camp
    • Daily care of cats at shelter – clean cages, etc.
  • People skilled with computers
    • Data entry and other clerical assistance with animals being admitted to the shelter
  • Handy men/women
  • Photographers
  • Supply inventory organizers who can also run errands to area stores as necessary

They are also still looking for barn homes for feral cats and adoptive and foster homes for tame cats. If you are an individual or humane shelter interested in fostering, adopting, or offering a barn home please email: alleycat@alleycat.org.
