16 Week Update

May 17, 2008

You knew it was inevitable… I’m going to talk about each and every one of my monthly/bi-monthly appointments, so you might as well get used to it now. 😉

So, yesterday, my 16-week (4 month) appointment went very well. Everything is on schedule, and myself and the baby are in perfect health!

As my care has been with midwives and not OB/GYN’s, I haven’t had a chance to have an official ultrasound since after the accident (although I never mention the ultrasound in that post because the news wasn’t out, yet). They regularly use dopplers instead of ultrasound machines because they are less invasive.

Yesterday, however, the baby was moving around a lot and hiding from the doppler, so the midwife couldn’t get a clear reading of the heartbeat. So the midwife wanted to bring out the ultrasound to take a look. I was all for it! Even though it was low-quality and grainy, I got to see our baby again!

He or she was facing down for most of the ultrasound and we noticed some hiccups and kicking (almost like backward kicks). Towards the end, the baby moved to face directly at us for a short time. It was so amazing.

Here’s one of the photo stills from the ultrasound. It was my favorite because you can see the left leg so clearly.

16 week ultrasound

At the end of the appointment, she handed me a referral to a doctor to schedule a high quality ultrasound for the “anatomy scan” at the hospital. That means we’ll know if we’re having a boy or a girl in the next 2-3 weeks! I’m so excited!

Can I offer you two pieces of advice?

Spend a lot of time naked right now. Look at yourself from every angle because in a few months you won’t be able to see anything and what you can see won’t be nearly as cute.

Secondly, never listen to any parenting advice from anyone. It’s all annoying.

It great to hear that you are so excited and that you going to use a midwife. Hopefully, you haven’t experienced any morning sickness. Cheers.

Thanks for the update! I loved my ultrasound pictures. I still have them, too!

I know you’re new in town. Email me sometime and let’s get together for coffee (decaf for you!) and after the baby comes, you can ride on our scooters. 🙂

Hello Chandra,
I am so glad to read that you are going to have a baby and that you have a happy life. I love being retired and spend time with my grandkids. I am afraid I have neglegted my website because of new interest here on the Washington coast. My balcony overlooks the ocean and the San Juan Islands. Life is good!

Cara – Amazing, huh!? I’m in awe of it every time I get to see him or her moving on an ultrasound. It’s truly magical to me.

Rebecca – Thank you very much!

Tammy – Why, thank you! I think so, too. 😉

Sue Doe-Nim – Hahaha! Okay, I will try and follow your advice as best I can. I’m already noticing that it’s harder to see my feet. As for reaching my feet? That’s getting harder by the day. Slip-on shoes and pedicures are sounding better by the second.

Also, no worries, I’m going to take any parenting advice with a grain of sand.

Dan Boyle – Yes, we are both extremely happy. I am also very happy with my choice to use midwives, as well. I had very bad morning sickness during the first trimester, but it went away slowly as I reached my second trimester.

katelin – I’m glad someone other than us finds it exciting. And thank you!!!

Mrs Pop – Yes, we are very new to Austin, and with no family here (or nearby) we’re trying to reach out whenever and wherever we can, so thank you for the invite! I’ll contact you soon so we can plan to meet somewhere!

Helga – Thank you! I’m happy that you are enjoying your retirement and that your life is good. Also, websites can wait. Real life comes first! 🙂

KSS – Heehee!
