Thinking About Moving

Texas, with cute animals!Recently, the topic of moving out of state has come up. Why? Well, why not, really? We both love California, but feel drawn to move elsewhere. There is no specific reason really. We just want to move.

Now that we’ve both settled on the idea of moving, we’re trying to decide exactly where to move to. Kevin and I have batted around ideas for where we want to move and have been looking more seriously at Austin, Texas.

Neither Kevin nor I have visited Austin, but from what we’ve read (and we’ve done lots of reading), it seems like a perfect place for us.

Here is where you come in, though. If you know anything about Austin or have any opinions on it, either good or bad, I want to know! Please let me know anything you’ve heard about, read about or know about the city. This is a big decision for us and I want to know we’re weighing all of our options before pulling up roots and relocating.

I’ve never been to Austin, but a blogger I read, Stephanie Klein, relocated there from NYC a little while ago. You could probably find some tidbits at her place:

Don’t get seriously ill in Texas. Three words: Advance Directives Act, AKA The Texas Futile Care Law. *shudders*

It’s a cool town as far as Texas towns go. Great stores, great atmosphere – very college town-y, great restaurants, GREAT music scene (some really good festivals go on there), has the cool bat cave and Lance Armstrong. Only thing I can’t stand about it is the heat, it gets STINKING HOT there. If you can deal with the heat it would be a fun place to live.

I recently lived in San Antonio for about 3 years, which is about an hour from Austin. It’s a great town – great music scene – well, I pretty much agree with everything Shelly before me said about it. If I were looking for a neat place to live – Austin is high on my list.

I am a little biased on the Texas topic, being a native Texan. We live in North Texas but, we love to take trips to Austin. We have thought about moving there ourselves. Why haven’t we? Easy…traffic. The traffic in Austin is terrible, it didn’t use to be but, now it is. Depending on where you were going to work I would either live in Dripping Springs (southwest of Austin) or Round Rock (just north). It is an extremely laid back city and nothing like Dallas or Houston. I would ask Chicken Fried Therapy (http://www.chickenfriedtherapy.blogspot.com/), she is a transplant who lives in Austin. Feel free to email me with any questions.

Texas? Well, here is a site you might want to explore before deciding on a neighborhood:

  7. Miz UV – She writes a great blog. Will be reading it from now on. Thanks for the heads up!

Bobby – Yikes. I did look that up and it is a bit scary.

Shelly – Cool! Thanks for the info – it’s just the kind of info I was looking for. We’ve read several places that it gets hot, though no one mentioned “stinking hot”. 😆 Either way, I adore the heat and humidity and will be quite happy if it is hot most of the time. Kevin said he would “deal”. Haha!

How2Blogger – Thanks! This is perfect. Thanks for your opinion and info!

Mandy – Hrm, bad traffic, huh? I’ve read a lot about it, but didn’t know it was that bad. I wonder if it is as bad as traffic is in Los Angeles, because that would seriously suck. We will look into those other towns you mentioned – thank you! Thanks for the blog, too. Will add it to my feed and read it for other insights. Also, I just might take you up on your offer to email you if any questions come up between Kevin and I. 🙂

GG – Haha! Thanks, GG. I’ve bookmarked it and will use it if (when?) we start looking for housing in/near Austin.

  8. […] We’ve been sweeping and vacuuming all day and I still feel like the place is dusty, but ya know what? At least the floors are done and what that really amounts to, in my mind, is that the place is ready to either rent or sell (depending on the market) when the times comes to move out of state. […]
