Blog Day for The MOTHERS Act

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

BlogHers Act: Blog Day for the Mothers ActToday is Blog Day for The MOTHERS Act! It is a day to raise awareness about a serious disease that affects up to 20% of new mothers, as much as 800,000 American women each year, a disease called postpartum depression. It is also an important day to act!

Right now, as you read this, a life saving legislative initiative, which will help to end the suffering of thousands of mothers, infants and families, while offering education, research and training to those who are charged with their care, is awaiting U.S. Senate sponsorship and support. The Moms Opportunity to Access Help, Education, Research and Support for Postpartum Depression Act, or MOTHERS Act is that initiative. And it needs your voice to become federal law!

Before you click away, let me remind you of something. All of us today, reading this, have something in common; we all have mothers. What I ask of you is so very simple to do and it only requires you to make one quick phone call.

Here is all you need to do:

First, find your U.S. Senator from this list.

Second, pick up the phone and call! If the line is busy, call back or leave your message.

Third, use this script, if you need an idea of what to say:

“Hello this is (your name), one of Senator (Senator’s name) constituents from (your town). I am calling to ask the Senator to co-sponsor The MOTHERS Act bill number S. 1375, sponsored by Senator Menendez, which will provide funding for research, education, screening and treatment of postpartum depression.”

That’s it! Your state Senator is there to hear what you have to say, and act upon, what you want to see happen in our country. He or she will appreciate your phone call on what is important to YOU.

Southern California Fires

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

I’ve had several people, including friends and family, contact me in concern over the Southern California fires. Thankfully, Kevin and I, and both of our families are unaffected. We are all doing well. 🙂

For us, the fires are about 43 miles north of us (1 hour drive), in Malibu, and about 106 miles south of us (2 hour drive), in San Diego. Sure, we can smell the smoke in the air because of the blustery winds, but that is the extent of what we are experiencing.

I’ve been thinking, however, that I can’t just sit here on my duff and watch as people and animals need help. As stated above, San Diego is only 2 hours away. I can even go for an evening and help out. My friend Cat and I have been throwing the idea around of volunteering down there over the last hour or so. If I go down there, it won’t be for very long because I have work and appointments to tie up loose ends before our trip that I have to keep.

As usual, though, I want to jump in, but considering that I am still dealing with somewhat severe health issues (toxins in my lungs, liver and blood) from the post-Hurricane Katrina animal rescue work I did New Orleans, I am leery of making things worse with the possibility of inhaling smoke.

Of course, I will keep you updated if we do go volunteer and if anything changes.

Trip to Thailand

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

In a little less than 5 days, Kevin and I will on our way to Thailand to spend 10 full days exploring the country! This is a trip that we have been wanting to take for years, and now, to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary (October 25), we are finally going! I am both ecstatic and nervous. It’s the good sort of nervous though; the butterflies-in-your-stomach kind.

I’ve never been overseas before and just the thought of being somewhere as exotic as Thailand is so exhilarating. New smells, new customs, new foods.. and a language that I know frightfully little of. Thankfully, there will be someone there who speaks both Thai and English. That puts a lot of worries to rest for me.

Usually, I’d be worried about what I can eat, but there are plenty of vegan/vegetarian-friendly restaurants over there and I am sure I will have many chances to thoroughly explore vegan Thai cuisine.

Our planned route takes us almost straight up the middle of the country. Our first stop is Bangkok, where we will stay for 3 nights, then a stop at Ayuthaya and Lopburi before heading to Phitsanulok for 1 night. From Phitsanulok we go to Lampang for 1 night. After a stop at Phayao, a historic rural town in Northern Thailand, we head for Chiang Rai for 2 nights. Our last stop is Chiang Mai for 1 night, then we fly back to Bangkok for 1 more night before flying back home.

Here is a screen shot of our route in Google Maps, with my addition of the English names of the cities:

Thailand Trip Route

During our trip, I hope to utilize my phone’s wifi capability to connect to free wifi hot spots in the cities we will be traveling to so I can blog our daily sightseeing. I’ll probably do one more test post to double-check that it works the way I want it to, as well.

If you have been to Thailand and have visited any of the cities we are staying in, please share with me your insights! Any tips or recommended sightseeing stops will be much appreciated.
