Found Dog” – Uploaded by Binary Blonde on 24th December, 2005.

I am headed back home today. My days were very long and I was too exhausted to send a photo message by the time I got to bed. I did take two other photos, which I have plenty of time to send now. Several nights ago, Ginny and I went to several addresses in the still uninhabited areas of Orleans Parish where we had noted friendly/pregnant cats. I spotted this found pet sign and it made me happy to see in spite of where we were and what we were doing.

Celebration Waystation
Celebration Waystation” – Uploaded by Binary Blonde on 19th December, 2005.

This cutie is “Celebration”. She is a huge cuddlebug and loves meeting all the new volunteers. She is also our spokescat for the new facility we are in the process of setting up, located at a place that used to be named “Celebration Station”. ARNO/Best Friends Animal Society have partnered up to save the overwhelming amount of stray and feral animals in New Orleans and surrounding areas. I personally went out on a trapping mission today and there are cats, both stray and feral, everywhere in the uninhabited neighborhoods. More later, as I am exhausted.

Bittersweet
Bittersweet” – Uploaded by Binary Blonde on 17th December, 2005.

A unit of military police stopped by ARNO headquarters today to alert us about a “puppy” that a women noticed in a mound of debris. The women flagged them down. Long story short, we got the dog and I noticed she was ill, so I made the recommendation that she get to a 24 hour vet. They agreed, so we took her. Unfortunately, her prognosis wasn’t good. She has end stage heartworm, among other ills (fleas, mange, anemia, fluid in lungs). The heartworm is so severe that she could not survive treatment. She has just weeks left to live. I say bittersweet because she is now fed, bathed, warm and safe. At least her last remaining days will be filled with all the good and happy things a sweet dog like her deserves. I did not take a photo of “Merry” with my camera phone, but did with my digital and will upload them here when I return.

A Good Start
A Good Start” – Uploaded by Binary Blonde on 16th December, 2005.

I arrived in New Orleans last night, after a 3 hour delay in Houston due to severe thunder storms. Today, our team, which included a mom who brought her ten year old daughter and myself, went into the city to leave food and water for stray animals. Soon ARNO, where this very adoptable dog is staying, will be moving to a much larger state-of-the-art facility. After we move operations, we can start trapping the animals that we are leaving food and water for. I hope to send before and after photos of the new location. I also found out that Alley Cat Allies sent the last of the cats they were caring for to their new homes. Now, they are going to dismantle base camp and start a massive spay/neuter campaign for the city. It’s a much better time for New Orleans animals and I am so happy to be a part of it all.
