Go See WALL-E!

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

WALL-E So, on Saturday, Kevin and I went to see the movie WALL-E. I totally loved it! All the good stuff you’ve been hearing about it? It’s all true. Every bit of it. Seriously, go see it.

An interesting tidbit Kevin brought up, which I had not realised until he mentioned it, is that the majority of the movie has very little dialogue because the main characters are robots. You’d never notice, though. It’s really well done.

Anyway, I won’t give away any spoilers, even though I really want to blog about it, but it’s so good on so many levels. Go see it!

Edit – Okay, two things to keep in mind:

  1. Stay and watch the ending credits. They are an important detail (at least they were to me!) and they continue the story line past the somewhat abrupt ending.
  2. The movie might not be what you expect, based on the previews and ads, but you will still really enjoy it! As will children over 7 (8 maybe?), I imagine.

The Story of Stuff

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Story of Stuff The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It’ll teach you something, it’ll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.”

I first watched The Story of Stuff when I was working at my long-term temp job back in California. The job was excruciatingly boring and I didn’t have access to the internet.

Thankfully, my wonderful husband, Kevin, bought me an iPod Nano (ironic that I watched it on one of the very products she talks about) for our anniversary last year and I was able to download podcasts and video casts to watch while working (the job was mindless).

One of the first video casts I downloaded was The Story of Stuff and I was mesmerized by how interesting it was. Plus, it taught me a lot about all the stuff we buy that I never really knew. I came home that day a little depressed, but with determination to lessen the amount of stuff we buy and really take a close look at the stuff we already had.

So, Kevin and I sat down and really thought about doing a serious decluttering and worked out an agreement for buying less stuff overall.

The best tip I ever read about training yourself to buy less is to ask yourself two questions:

  • Do I need this?
  • Do I love this?

If the answer to either question is “yes”, then go ahead and get the item. If you’re unsure or the answer is “no”, then it’s probably not something you want to spend your hard-earned money on. 😉 I personally use this and it works like a charm. Most of the time I end up putting the item back and, truthfully, never even give it a second thought.

Kevin and I still hold true to our discussion that day and we rarely, if ever, buy something without really mulling it over and asking ourselves those two questions. The questions also work for when it comes time for purging yourself of clutter or if you feel overwhelmed by your stuff.

The Story of Stuff doesn’t go into these kind of tips, but it will surely teach you something you didn’t know and get you motivated to take action. I highly recommend watching the quick 20-minute video!

Eclectic Much?

Monday, February 11th, 2008

I never really realized how varied (read: completely eclectic) my music tastes are. However, just to confirm that statement, my iTunes just shuffled these songs, in this order:

Superfabulous by BT
What’s New Pussycat by Tom Jones
Paint the Sky with Stars by Enya
Little Fluffy Clouds by The Orb
Heavy Metal Drummer by Wilco
See the World by Gomez
Policy of Truth by Depeche Mode

Wow… 😮

Tintin’s Newest Adventure!

Tintin and Snowy

I am excited to announce that the classic comic by Hergé, featuring Tintin and his dog Snowy, will soon be made into three full-length movies!

Peter Jackson has teamed up with Steven Spielberg, who holds the film rights for the books, to make the movies. They will be based on three of the 23 comic books and the first of the series is hopefully to be released in 2009/2010.

I can’t tell you how excited I am about this news! I’ve been a Tintin fan since I discovered the comic, over 15 years ago, in a used book store. Now, I have the entire collection of comics and even a novel featuring the Belgian reporter titled Tintin in the New World. In the novel, Tintin even visits Machu Picchu!

Anyway, I digress. Back to more about the movies! From what I’ve read, they are going to be made back-to-back, like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and they will be a combination of computer animation and motion capture technology, with actors playing the characters. The budget will be in the region of $100 million per movie.

As far as I know they are still looking for the perfect actor to play Tintin. I’m assuming because of the search for the “perfect face”, the movie might take longer than anticipated to be released. That’s okay, though, because Tintin is the main character, so the perfect person has to play him. I’d rather wait an extra year for a superb movie than have them rush to make a mediocre one.
