Working on a New Look

November 17, 2007

I’ve been fiddling with a new template, because I just don’t do the “insta-theme” thing. This current theme, while I like it, is not something I am going to stick with. Personally, I like to fiddle and tweak and make my blogs’ theme my own.

Thing is, there are so many themes to choose from for WordPress that it makes my brain hurt. I have no idea where to start! There are several themes that I’ve come across, however, that do get the creative wheels turning (which is a good thing!). My favorite one, so far, is the Cutline theme. I really like that it can be easily (and simply) customized with a photo header. Another theme, which was more recently released, is Neoclassical. Again, the header can be personalized with a custom photo.

So, here’s a question. If you use WordPress, what theme do you use? And if you have made (or purchased) a custom theme, was it worth the time (and money)?

Since switching from Drupal to WordPress, I am just starting to learn what to look for, and what to stay away from, in WordPress themes, so I am open to any and all suggestions.

Okay, back to looking at themes!

Well, I usually will use a WordPress theme and then tweak it to my own. I like the look that you have now. Very clean and easy on the eyes! 😆

WordPress is very CSS-based for the design. You’d think that you can only control how the pages are displayed (as a list, or as a horizontal list) with PHP, but in fact it’s CSS. However, there is a *lot* of PHP in WP but it’s pretty easy with the WP Codex. You should really check out Lorelle on WordPress, she has lots of stuff to offer for people who use WP as their content management system.

A trick I used with WP was to find a theme I liked, then tweak it to my own, rather than design my own from scratch. Good luck, I know you can do it. Though I must concur with Simple Mindz, this theme is very clean and easy on the eyes.

Yeah, I think it looks great! I’d love to find a theme like this one. I love the sand type colors! This was wp right??

By “tweak it to my own”, I mean, I totally redid the CSS. I actually prefer CSS-based designs for this reason. Pretty simple if you know CSS.

*scratches head* I kind of like your theme 🙂 I’d stick with the style based themes, easily customizable and if your looking for a good place to start for the head mast I’d check here: http://www.sxc.hu/

My $.02 🙂

Simple Mindz – Thanks, glad you like this theme! I also like it, and yes, it’s a WordPress theme. It’s called “Silicon“. It’s just in my nature to make a theme my own and I feel like I can’t do that with this one. 😉

Bobby – After fiddling with the raw files of several themes, I have come to realise that WordPress themes are heavily PHP and CSS-based. That’s great, though, because I am good with both of those languages! I think I will look for a theme and tweak it, instead of making my own. 🙂

K – Thanks for your $.02, I always welcome others opinions! I will stick with style based themes, that are easily customizable. Also, thanks for the link to stock.xchng – good stuff! 😀
