Halloween Movie Marathon

October 31, 2006

I wanted to throw a Halloween costume party and have all sorts of spooky-looking food/booze to serve, but alas, our floors are yet unfinished. They’re mostly done, though. Unfortunately, they’ve been mostly done for weeks now, but that will be remedied this weekend.

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie BrownSo, instead of the All Hallows Eve bash I wanted, Kev and I settled on having a Halloween movie marathon, popcorn included. 😀 Titles will include: Beetlejuice and/or Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (if we can find it at Blockbuster). What can I say? Tim Burton makes good Halloween movies.

We won’t be disturbed by trick-or-treaters because we live in a secured building and they find it too much of a hassle, but maybe some good ghosts will join us for a movie or two. 😉 After the movie marathon, we’ll probably be needing some caffeine, so we’ll walk to the local Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf for our own treat to end a relaxing Halloween evening with.

I hope whatever you are planning is safe and fun! Happy Halloween!

Halloween Pet Safety Tips

October 31, 2006

The haunted holiday when ghouls, ghosts, and scary creatures once again emerge for an evening of reverie can turn into a night of fright for your furry friends. Here are five tips from Pets911.com to make this Halloween a safe and happy one.

  1. Safety First – Reduce the risk of burns or injury by keeping your furry friends away from lit pumpkins and candles.
  2. Costume Alert – Dressing a pet can equal stressing a pet. If you must dress up your dog or cat, make sure that the costume is pet safe without small or dangling accessories that could be chewed off.
  3. Pets Inside Please – There is always the risk of your dog or cat running away due to fear or they could become the victims of pranks or malicious people. Black cats are especially at risk and should be confined for several days before and after Halloween.
  4. Tricks or Treats – When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your pet doesn’t dart outside. To minimize the risk, it is a good idea to confine pets to a separate room during the peak trick-or-treat times.
  5. Just Say No – No matter how strongly your dog or cat pleads for some of your treats, just say no. Chocolate can be deadly in any amount and candy wrappers can get stuck in your pet’s digestive tract and result in serious illness or death.

Great Advice

October 30, 2006

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

My father-in-law sent me that quote and it really hit home for me. I know he sent it because he knew I needed to hear it and for that I am so grateful. I tried to find who quipped it, but over and over again the results came up with "author unknown". Ah well..

I think I need to tattoo it on my forehead. Backwards, of course, so that I see it when I look in the mirror. Sometimes, in my quest to finish a goal I’ve set for myself, I lose focus of why I actually chose the goal in the first place. It’s like I get some sort of tunnel vision, where, at the end of the tunnel is the goal and nothing else around it matters. It’s my perfectionist nature coming to bite me in the ass. Though, I’m trying to learn that life just isn’t about checking off your "Goal To-Do List". It’s also about enjoying everything around it, and maybe even re-evaluating those goals along the way.

Sometimes, along the path towards a goal, I might find something that confirms my passion for it and other times I might find something that makes me wonder why the hell I wanted that goal in the first place. It’s why, I find, I have to continuously take note of what is around me, and why my tunnel vision can get me in sticky situations. Situations such as realising I’m so close to the original goal, but wondering why the hell I’m still pursuing it. At that point, I tell myself, it’s a waste to NOT finish the goal, even though it’s not something I want anymore.

Ugh. I think one of my new goals is to consciously take that quote to heart and live it.

Goal To-Do List

  1. Stop and smell the roses.
