Recent Events and Happenings

August 30, 2006

I’m feeling much better, not that anyone was really that worried. Anyone who knows me, knows that I can’t be depressed for too long. Life goes on and there’s too much stuff to be done!

Speaking of, we’re totally and completely done with installing the wood in our hallway (and accompanying foyer!). Sure, I know.. just a hallway, right? Pfft. We don’t live in box and, of course, the hallway is slightly angled, so, in turn the wood needs to be cut at a slight angle so it looks straight when done. Let me just say that I hope to never have to do this shit again, because as much as I love giving our carpet the boot (and in turn, 90% of my allergies), angles are a pain in the tuchus!

In other news.. and this I’m super excited about. I’ll be hosting my own radio show called "Digital Tapas" on Mojo Radio Live! You might have noticed the nifty graphic I whipped up over there on the sidebar to promote it and wondered why I hadn’t mentioned it. Well, wonder no more. :-D

How’d I get this gig, you ask? Well, when the lovely WebKittyn started the internet radio station, she asked if anyone would want to host their own show. I jumped on the opportunity so I could bring my love of eclectic, dance and trance music to the masses (or at least the 20 or so listeners we have right now ). I’ll be hosting a full hour show on Sunday nights, starting at 8pm PST (11pm EST). It’ll be live.. nothing pre-recorded for this gal. The premiere of "Digital Tapas" will be sometime in September, so stay tuned!

Completely off-subject, Kev and I are heading to his hometown during the long weekend for his 10-Year High School Reunion. I’m sure it’ll be fun, or at least won’t totally suck. Hey, at the very least we’re guaranteed a good story or two. Plus, there’s going to be booze and that makes just about anything bearable. ;-) If anything seriously funny happens, do expect for me to blog it. I’m hoping I’ll get some good/embarrassing/funny photos as a bonus.

Oh.. and I found out yesterday, at the first class meeting for Anatomy of Domestic Animals, that there will be a total of FOUR dissects (3 cats and 1 rat). Super-fuckin’-great, huh? I gotta do them, though, or I don’t pass and then I won’t be able to pass the California State Board test and then I won’t be an officially registered vet tech, and that’s why I went back to school at the age of almost-27 in the first place. So.. yeah.. I gotta do them.

Anticipating a Memory

August 29, 2006

The few days leading up to today have been rough – mentally and physically. It was as if I was expecting to hear about another disaster. My mind, in anticipation, kept churning up images of what I saw doing pet rescue. The last few days I restlessly fell asleep teary-eyed and exhausted or silently dropping tears randomly when I would see those images again on the news. The latest was in the gym last night, on the treadmill – they have tv’s there. Watching those images again, even my gym music piped through my headphones seemed far away.

My body, in anticipation, and being "fed" images through my mind, has not been keeping down food well and churning up my stomach when I did eat. I’ve had either headaches or body aches for no real reason, either.

Of course, I’m happy and relieved that today is a quiet hurricane day, with no hurricanes nearing the Gulf Coast. One would think that considering how I’ve been feeling about reliving it, I should be able to write more.. something more, but I can’t. Words seem to fail me when it comes to expressing my experiences doing pet rescue in the aftermath of Katrina. Nothing I write seems to capture exactly what I want to express.

So, instead, I am including a writing by Brenda Shoss of Kinship Circle. It was sent a few days ago for the people who did pet rescue, in anticipation of today. It was through Kinship Circle email alerts that I learned of the immediate need for veterinary technicians for Alley Cat Allies last year and why I knew I couldn’t sit on my ass and do nothing.

August 29 – One Year Ago This Day
By Brenda Shoss, Kinship Circle

August 29, 2006 marks the day, exactly one year ago, Category 5 Katrina cast people and animals adrift in a sea of loss and despair. When the levees broke, a singular scream arose from dark waters, drowning out reason.
Erasing hope.

Who would hear their cries, scattered over rotting roads and toxic heaps?
Who would see their desperation — locked behind doors, bound to fence posts, stranded on rooftops?
Whose hands would heal their anonymous pain?

At least 600,000 searched for familiar faces. But frantic eyes turned cloudy with despair when no one came. Broken bodies collapsed. Huddled inside bathtubs. Hiding behind walls. Their skin, now paper-thin, stretched over bones. A last tail wagged. An unheard purr rose from the rubble and merged with the wind.

Who would hear them?
Our government did not.

Who would see them?
Our law enforcers did not.

Who would return for them?

You did.

And with your eyes, they were seen.

With your voice, they were heard.

With your hands, they knew comfort.

With your conviction, they were fed, rescued, and reunited.

With your resolve, they found new homes.

With your mercy, they saw love before death.

With your empathy, all were cherished and remembered.

You came from California, Canada, Texas, Minnesota, St. Louis, Washington, Florida… even as far away as Sweden. A legion of the compassionate.

Shelter workers, veterinarians, students, cops, soldiers, moms, sons, daughters, grandparents… Giant burly men and fierce lean women. You left your jobs, your families and homes to salvage lives forgotten in the wreckage.

August 29, 2005 – August 29, 2006.
Our lives are forever united in tears, grief, chaos and renewal.

Best “Just Blogging” Blog

August 26, 2006

Kev and I just laid our last piece of wood for the day (we’re about 85% done in our hallway!), so I made a salad for lunch and sat down in front of my laptop to check my email. One of my messages was an Amazon.com gift certificate from Blogathon.org. Wha’? Why was I receiving a gift certificate from Blogathon? I was so confused, so I went to the most logical place to figure out why – the Blogathon site.

Great googly moogly! I received the gift certificate because my blog won a Blogathon award! I won for "Best “Just Blogging” Blog". I’m not totally sure what that means, but I don’t care – my blog WON! It totally made my day.

Thank you Frykitty and those who nominated my blog! You made this "Just Blogging" blonde blogger one happy camper. :-D And that’s just because of the award; the gift certificate is the rainbow sprinkles and cherry on top. :yum:

Congratulations! to all the other winners:
