Insomnia Sucks

December 8, 2005

The title pretty much says it all.

I’ve had insomnia all my life, but it comes and goes in several-month-long cycles. The longer cycles usually show up during winter. This is a particularly bad cycle. I think I’ve slept MAYBE 8 hours in 3 days.

Part of it is the nightmares. I’m still having them. The ones where I can’t help animals who are in pain, animals who are dying, animals who are trapped where I can’t get them out. I think I’m “coping” with them by not sleeping, therefore no possibility of having them in the first place.

Paging Dr. Freud…

Gawd, I need sleep.

I’m not sure what all you’ve tried or not, but have you considered the possibility of meditation? Just before going to sleep, meditate for about 20 minutes. Nothing major, just close your eyes, and start following your breath in and out of your nostrils and notice how it feels. If your mind wanders, just gently bring it back to following your breath. I found that this simple meditation, or relaxation exercise really, calms me a lot, and allows me to sleep way more peaceful than before. Just give it a short for a week or so, it does work for a lot of people.

Cute baby btw, I bet he’s sleeping for both of you :)

Hi there! I saw you on Vegan Momma’s Blog and just HAD to stop by. You have an absolutly wonderful place here! I too am into volunteering, continuously trying to become vegan, (lacto/lacto-ovo for 12 years), and we are around the same age (give/take a few years).

I hope you don’t mind, but I am going to link you – RIGHT AWAY!

You have lots to see and do here and it’s wonderful to “meet” another female with the same interests!

I’m located at:

Happy Thursday!

I too suffer from Insomnia, but nowhere near as bad as yours in repects to the several month long cycles. I usually suffer for 2 weeks at a time, and there’s no saying when it’ll happen. I feel for you.

I found your blog via BlogExplosion, and will definitely be back to check it out again. You have lots to see, and I find it very interesting.

I suffered from insomnia for ages. Finally my doc gave me this little pink pill. I asked what it was and she said it was something they give to schizophrenics. Say Wha?

Then, after my eyeballs were reinserted, she told me they find it helps with sleep…sorta how wellbutrin helps people stop smoking.

I am leary because that schizophrenic thing is a bit unnerving but that stuff made me a drooling drunk needing help to bed. She lowered the dose to something a 2 year old would take and I’ve slept like a baby…at a reasonable hour…for over a year.

It’s called Seroquel. Ask about it.

Harmonia, thanks for stopping by and letting me know where I can find your home on the web. You have a darling place with some great recipes – I’ll have to try that casserole soon. Thanks for the link back!

Dawn, I am glad you don’t have to deal with severe insomnia. I’ve come close, but wussed out at the last minute, to downing a few shots just to pass out when it gets really bad. Hope to hear from you again, maybe on a less depressing subject!

Miss Ann Thrope, thank you for the advice. I have a doctors appointment next month, and as much as I hate medicating myself, I am fed-up enough to ask about your miracle sleep pill. Not sleeping makes me abnormally bitchy, on top of the headaches and flattering punched-in-the-eyes look.
